Be Safe and Smart on Facebook

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

facebook_pic Facebook is a great way to connect and to share your life with your friends and family. But it is important to be safe and smart when using Facebook, or any website for that matter. Here are some basic ideas and things to remember when you’re on Facebook:

  • Never put sensitive data such as your social security number or credit card numbers anywhere on Facebook.
  • Adjust your privacy settings to increase security in Facebook. Don’t just keep them at their default settings. Every Facebook page has a “privacy” link at the bottom.
  • If your having trouble with someone on Facebook you always have the option to “block” them. This will deny them access to any of your Facebook information.
  • If that does not work, don’t be afraid to report them to Facebook admins.
  • Think before you post. Anytime you put something on the web it is out there forever. Even if you delete it or remove it the information is saved somewhere.
  • Keep in mind that anyone, not just your friends, can come across your information. Before posting pictures and rants think about who your comfortable with seeing it. Your parents? Your boss? A future employer looking to hire you?

If you haven’t already spend some time in the privacy area of Facebook. There you can adjust how people who are not listed as your friends see your profile. As well as what Google and other search engines see. Taking a little time to read all the fine print and privacy settings can save many future headaches and embarrassments.

Bottom line: Use common sense. And when in doubt, don’t share on Facebook. Now go have fun!

Chances are you’ve heard of Facebook. In less than 5 years the website that started as an electronic yearbook for a college has grown into the way to connect with friends, old and new, on the internet. Facebook now has over 50 million members and those membership ranks grow everyday.

Not wanting to miss out on this new way for people to connect, IBMC has joined Facebook too. Now students past and present can connect through Facebook. As well as potential students thinking about coming to IBMC.

Over time we are going to be adding content to the IBMC page. Photos, videos, blogs, and events just to name a few. We also invite you to share your stuff with us on the IBMC page.
