But due to the type of information that many of us share on FB privacy is always a concern. As IBMC moves to stay more in touch with students via Facebook we want to make sure you are familiar with Facebook’s privacy settings and how to adjust them.

This brief video tutorial shows you exactly where to find your settings and how to adjust them:

Facebook is a social networking website launched in February 2004 and operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. Users can add people as friends and send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves. Additionally, users can join networks organized by workplace, school, or college. The website’s name stems from the colloquial name of books given to students at the start of the academic year by university administrations in the US with the intention of helping students to get to know each other better. Anyone age 13 or older can become a Facebook user.

It seems that everyone is on Facebook these days. Well I am here to tell you that IBMC has been on Facebook for quite some time. Are you a fan? Click here to become one.

FB is a great way for students and prospective students to get connected and stay connected with IBMC. Right now we are working on adding new applications and ways for you to also connect with other students and staff of IBMC in an effort to help you succeed with your career goals.

Here are some things you might not know:

“Founded in February 2004, Facebook is a social utility that helps people communicate more efficiently with their friends, family and coworkers. The company develops technologies that facilitate the sharing of information through the social graph, the digital mapping of people’s real-world social connections. Anyone can sign up for Facebook and interact with the people they know in a trusted environment.”

Average user has 130 friends on the site
Average user sends 8 friend requests per month
Average user spends more than 55 minutes per day on FB
Average user clicks the Like button on 9 pieces of content each month
Average user writes 25 comments on FB content each month
Average user becomes a fan of 4 Pages each month
Average user is invited to 3 events per month
Average user is a member of 13 groups

How do you measure up against the “average user” on Facebook?

Also be sure to let us know what you’d like to see from IBMC on Facebook. More events? Posted schedule? Crazy pictures of Steve Steele? Tell us, we are all ears. There is a discussion board on the IBMC fan page to leave your input.

Or maybe you are not a FB user, then let us know what sites you do use. MySpace? Twitter? Friendster?

Facebook is a great way to connect and to share your life with your friends and family. But it is important to be safe and smart when using Facebook, or any website for that matter. Here are some basic ideas and things to remember when you’re on Facebook:

Never put sensitive data such as your social security number or credit card numbers anywhere on Facebook.

Adjust your privacy settings to increase security in Facebook. Don’t just keep them at their default settings. Every Facebook page has a “privacy” link at the bottom.

If your having trouble with someone on Facebook you always have the option to “block” them. This will deny them access to any of your Facebook information.

If that does not work, don’t be afraid to report them to Facebook admins.

Think before you post. Anytime you put something on the web it is out there forever. Even if you delete it or remove it the information is saved somewhere.

Keep in mind that anyone, not just your friends, can come across your information. Before posting pictures and rants think about who your comfortable with seeing it. Your parents? Your boss? A future employer looking to hire you?

If you haven’t already spend some time in the privacy area of Facebook. There you can adjust how people who are not listed as your friends see your profile. As well as what Google and other search engines see. Taking a little time to read all the fine print and privacy settings can save many future headaches and embarrassments.

Bottom line: Use common sense. And when in doubt, don’t share on Facebook. Now go have fun!

Chances are you’ve heard of Facebook. In less than 5 years the website that started as an electronic yearbook for a college has grown into the way to connect with friends, old and new, on the internet. Facebook now has over 50 million members and those membership ranks grow everyday.

Not wanting to miss out on this new way for people to connect, IBMC has joined Facebook too. Now students past and present can connect through Facebook. As well as potential students thinking about coming to IBMC.

Over time we are going to be adding content to the IBMC page. Photos, videos, blogs, and events just to name a few. We also invite you to share your stuff with us on the IBMC page.

Click here to go to the page and become a “fan.”
