Monday, April 6th, 2009

Starting, or going back to school is very emotional. You may feel scared, excited, nervous, and anxious. Don’t worry, you are not alone! If you’re enrolled to start classes on April 13, please post a comment and meet your classmates. Find someone to sit next to in your first class or maybe you’ll find someone to carpool with. New IBMC students meet more of the staff

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

feb orientation009 New IBMC students meet more of the staff After students get their paperwork and future graduate photo taken care of they head into a large conference room for a 45 minute meeting with some of the IBMC staff. Rich, the CEO of IBMC was the first to speak.

Rich congratulates the students for coming to IBMC, for deciding to get out of a rut, for having the guts to change their lives. He also encourages the new students to use IBMC’s open door policy. Whether it be to talk about teachers, text books, or vending machines, the CEO’s door is always open to hear from the students.

Next up is Diana the Vice President of Education at IBMC, who also reinforces the school’s open door policy. After all that is why staff keeps so much candy on their desks. Diana then addresses the importance of the students checking their email. A lot of important school information is distributed via email. She also goes over the packet each student will receive depending on what program they are enrolled in.

After Diana, Joanne from Career Services speaks. She goes over the role of Career Services in finding the students a career, from externships to resumes. Joanne also states that IBMC has a 90% job placement rate, which is pretty good if you ask me.

Sherry from Admissions speaks next and she brings prizes. The students are already familiar with her and the Admission Department so she knows them by name. She asks trivia questions and gives away IBMC gear to the right answers.

Steve, the President of IBMC, wraps up the meeting with 4 things it takes to be successful at IBMC. Which are:

1. Get here.
2. Keep a positive attitude.
3. Work hard.
4. Remember why your at IBMC.

I would tell you more and go into more detail but I don’t want to give any away. Click here if your ready to enroll at IBMC.

Getting oriented at IBMC

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

feb orientation012 Getting oriented at IBMC Starting anything in life can be scary.

And it is especially true of starting down a new career path. But that is what IBMC is all about, getting people on a path to a career. In order to do that it is important to help students get oriented with IBMC as they take their first steps in their new path. Needless to say orientation is a big day around the IBMC campus.

I am at the February IBMC New Student Orientation on the Fort Collins campus. Students are welcomed by IBMC before they walk in the door. A staff member stands outside to greet students as they come in. Upon entering the school students are guided to a reception desk near the student lounge. At the desk students receive a welcome packet, their class schedule, and their text book.

Then it is on to the Financial Aid/Student Accounts table where friendly IBMC staff is waiting to make sure all the feb orientation013 Getting oriented at IBMCstudent’s paper work is in order. Despite the fact that this station involves accounting and money this seems to be a pretty painless stop for the students.

Next is the “Future Graduate” photo. Students stand and smile and have their picture taken. Cementing the knowledge that one day they will be a graduate of IBMC.

I can feel the excitement in the air. Yes starting something new is scary, but it is also exciting. The school does such a good job of making each student feel  welcome and comfortable. Which gets them over their fears. Even though students have not even started classes yet they are already known by many of the faculty of IBMC. This is proof of how well people are taken care of the minute they walk through the front door of IBMC.

All this has been just the start of orientation at IBMC. They save the best part for last. And I will save telling you about it for another post.
