Updating Your Facebook Privacy Settings

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Facebook is a great tool for staying connected to friends, family, and organizations that you care about. But due to the type of information that many of us share on FB privacy is always a concern. As IBMC moves to stay more in touch with students via Facebook we want to make sure you are familiar with Facebook’s privacy settings and how to adjust them.

This brief video tutorial shows you exactly where to find your settings and how to adjust them:

Facebook is a social networking website launched in February 2004 and operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. Users can add people as friends and send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves. Additionally, users can join networks organized by workplace, school, or college. The website’s name stems from the colloquial name of books given to students at the start of the academic year by university administrations in the US with the intention of helping students to get to know each other better. Anyone age 13 or older can become a Facebook user.

IBMC’s social network

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

socialmedia IBMCs social network The social media and Web 2.0 landscape is huge and growing everyday. Websites and applications come and go constantly, it can be hard to keep up. The key is to focus, which is why IBMC is using six main tools to build it’s own social network.

1. A blog. “Blog” is a contraction of the term “web log.” Basically a blog is a website that is updated by one or more authors on a regular basis. These updates are displayed in reverse chronological order, meaning the newest entry is on the top of the page.

2. Facebook. A social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study, and live around them. Facebook allows users to upload an unlimited number of photos, videos, and shared links. It is a great way to learn more about the people you know as well as keep up with what they are doing.

3. MySpace. More of an open online community that allows users to meet people, discover bands and artists. It also allows users to share photos and journals.

4. YouTube. The leading online video sharing website. It allows people to easily upload and share video clips through web sites, mobile devices, blogs, and emails.

5. Flickr. An online photo site that allows users to upload photos that can be organized by sets. Photos can be viewed and commented on by anyone. (This can be adjusted in the privacy settings.)

6. Twitter. A “microblog” that allows users to send show updates that are 140 characters or less. Most people use it has a cross between a blog and an instant message service.

Time will tell which one of these outlets will be most used by the IBMC community. Which one do you like? What did we miss? Is there another application that should be added to the list?

Why social media?

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Last Thursday I attended my first IBMC assembly. At that assembly I was introduced to the students and staff as “Blog Guy.” The person who is at IBMC to set up the school’s social network via Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, and of course this blog. The common question is why? Why is IBMC investing in social media and Web 2.0 applications?

Take a look at this video by Common Craft on social media:

The moral of the story is that social media opens up communication and brings people together. This is exactly what we will be doing here at IBMC. We will be sharing with the world what is happening on the three campuses of IBMC but we will also learn from current students as the dialogue grows.

My job as “blog guy” is to start that dialogue. I am going to be spending time on each campus talking to students, staff, and anyone I can find who will talk to me about IBMC. I will also be taking pictures and shooting video on each campus. I will be sharing all that good stuff with you here and the other outlets we have set up.

I will also share with information on how to use blogs and social media in relation to student life, from connecting with other students to finding jobs. Social media is here to stay, each day more and more people and businesses are using social media. Are you?

The Week Of Updates

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

That is what this weeks feels like as we get this Social Media Campaign off the ground. What does it mean when I say that IBMC is launching a Social Media Campaign? It means that there is so much going on at IBMC and there is so much to share that we are creating a MySpace page, a Facebook Group, a Twitter account, a Flickr photostream, and a YouTube Channel.

Everyone at IBMC is excited to begin sharing with you through all these tools we have now. But the more exciting part is that you get to be a part of it too. That is the what makes all this media “social.” You can comment on any of these blog posts as well as on the other platforms we will be using. Don’t be afraid to speak up and join the conversation.

It is our hope to offer you many ways to get in touch and stay in touch with IBMC.

See you tomorrow,

Daryle
